how i built a real-time seo dashboard with google apis

authentication token management

this request pulls query and page-level performance data, limited to 1,000 rows per call. the rowlimit parameter is crucial. search console enforces a maximum of 25,000 rows across multiple paginated requests, so designing efficient queries that target specific dimensions becomes essential.

step 2: data processing

the apis return raw data that needs processing. i built functions to calculate week-over-week changes and aggregate metrics by page.

raw api responses arrive as nested json objects that require substantial processing before they're dashboard-ready. i built a series of transformation functions that calculate derived metrics and prepare data for visualization.

the dashboard updates every 30 seconds. i use websocket connections to push new data to the frontend without page refreshes.

on the server side, vercel functions don't natively support long-lived websocket connections, so i implemented a hybrid approach. periodic api polling writes to firebase, and firebase's real-time listeners push changes to connected clients. this architecture leverages firebase's synchronization engine while keeping serverless functions stateless and scalable.

step 4: oauth authentication

oauth 2.0 authentication with google apis involves a complex dance of authorization codes, access tokens, and refresh tokens. the initial authentication redirects users to google's consent screen, where they grant permissions. upon approval, your application receives an authorization code that exchanges for an access token and refresh token.

what didn't work
